The Greenup Fire Department, was formed by city charter in 1890. When the Township of Greenupsburg 1815-1890, revoked its charter and formed the City of Greenup. Before 1890, the town depended solely upon community involvement with the use of a bucket brigade when fire erupted. When Greenupsburg's charter was revoked in 1890, the new charter for the City of Greenup called for the city to provide an apparatus for adequate fire protection. This hand pumper sat outside the county court house until needed by the citizens. Eventually the citizens built a storage area for the pumper also shown in picture. In 1926, the department named its first Fire Chief, Earn Adkins. He was followed by Bill Hale, then Thurman Darby, who served as Chief until 1937. Next to serve was Vernon Kendall from 1937 - 1959. After such time, Thurman Darby led the department for a second time. In 1962 Chief Lloyd Sizemore, took over the department followed by Joe Kendall, Vernon Kendall's Nephew. Chief Joe Kendall is the chief in which the current station is proudly named. The current station resides at 1110 Walnut Street,Kendall Station is actually the third station for the department. The first being shown in picture above, it was located where the parking lot is now at the County Court House Annex the second was attached to the now City Hall, and then when the department grew, it moved to its present location on Walnut Street which was originally 2 bays, but had to be quickly expanded to 4 bays to keep up with the growth of the department. Presently the Greenup Fire Department has five trucks, 3 Pumpers/Engines, 1 Light Rescue Truck, and 1 - 75’ Arial Truck. The department currently has 25 members headed up by Chief Roger Harris. Other past Chiefs include Jesse Leadingham, Jim Doran, Mike Worthigton, Butch Bass, and Neil Wright. The Greenup Fire Department is blessed with a long line of knowledge, duty, honor and support.
